Julius Howe: Xennial
White Hart, Southwark
In this hour Julius Howe does what Peter Kay does not: remembers things that no one else can remember. It’s an extraordinary curation of nostalgia in an age when we fetishise what things were like when we were growing up. Howe delights in all the things that were forgettable and as he does so he delights in the awkwardness among the laughter he creates in the room. Struggling with his slideshow – printed on hardcopy obviously – Howe ramps up the awkwardness even further, however inadvertently; this awkwardness combined with the highlighted ridiculous paraphernalia serves only to underline his point (if ever there was one) that the things we get excited about when new are the things we so easily forget when they become tiresome or boring or embarrassing. As technology hurtles forward and society continues to embrace the latest innovations, Howe’s ability to shed light on the fleeting nature of excitement and the allure of the past is a poignant reminder of the cyclical nature of human fascination and forgetfulness. On the other hand, he could just be a hoarder who likes collecting tat.
